Mathematics

Intent

Maths education is clear and ambitious, designed to cultivate a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the ability to apply them fluently in various contexts. The curriculum intent is to foster a love for maths, promoting a growth mindset, and resilience in tackling mathematical challenges. It aims to ensure all pupils, regardless of background or ability, achieve mastery in key mathematical skills and concepts, preparing them for success in further education and future life endeavours, including through the use of assisted technology and a focus on oracy and speaking and listening skills from EYFS upwards.

Implementation

The curriculum is planned and sequenced, with a focus on progressive learning and formative assessment. Maths lessons are engaging, well-structured, and provide ample opportunities for pupils to develop mathematical fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Differentiated instruction is utilised to meet the needs of all learners, including those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) and those who are academically gifted. Teachers use a variety of resources, manipulatives, and technology to support the delivery of high-quality maths education, fostering a stimulating learning environment where pupils are encouraged to explore and make connections between mathematical concepts. Moreover, the curriculum implementation fosters inclusion and confidence in pupils, promoting articulate communication and a growth mindset that supports resilience in the face of challenges.

Impact

The impact of the maths curriculum is profound and far-reaching. Pupils make progress in their mathematical proficiency, achieving high standards of attainment and progress across all key stages. The school ensures that pupils are well-prepared for national assessments, with results consistently above national averages. Moreover, the impact extends beyond academic achievements, cultivating a positive attitude towards maths and developing essential life skills such as resilience, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Pupils leave the school equipped with a solid foundation in maths, ready to excel in their future education and contribute meaningfully to society. The focus on oracy, speaking, and listening skills alongside the integration of assisted technology from EYFS ensures that pupils are confident, articulate communicators, capable of engaging in mathematical discussions and articulating their thought processes effectively.

The intent, implementation, and impact of maths education are closely aligned, creating a cohesive learning experience that empowers pupils to become confident, proficient mathematicians.
