Art and Design
Intent
The intent of the art and design curriculum at our primary school is to foster creativity, cultural appreciation, and critical thinking skills among our pupils. We aim to provide a well-rounded art education that allows children to explore different artistic techniques, styles, and cultural traditions. By offering a diverse and inclusive art curriculum, we intend to nurture a love for creativity and self-expression in our pupils, instilling in them a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Our intent is underpinned by the National Curriculum for Art and Design, ensuring that our pupils are exposed to a broad range of art forms, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital design. We believe that by engaging with a variety of artistic mediums, our pupils will develop a rich visual vocabulary and an understanding of the role that art plays in society.
Implementation
To bring our intent to life, we have implemented an art and design programme that is sequenced, progressive, and tailored to the needs and interests of our pupils. Our curriculum is structured to allow children to build upon their prior knowledge and skills, developing their artistic abilities year on year.
We provide regular opportunities for pupils to experiment with different materials and techniques, encouraging them to take creative risks and express themselves authentically. Our art lessons are designed to be hands-on and practical, with a focus on process rather than just the end product. We also integrate art and design across the curriculum, making connections to other subjects such as history, geography, and science, to provide a rich and interconnected learning experience.
In addition, we ensure that our pupils have access to high-quality art resources and visits to local galleries and exhibitions to broaden their cultural horizons and inspire their artistic practice. Our teachers are skilled in delivering engaging art lessons that challenge and motivate pupils of all abilities, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where creativity can flourish.
Impact
The impact of our art and design provision can be seen in the creative achievements and personal development of our pupils. Through their engagement with the art curriculum, our students have demonstrated increased confidence, perseverance, and originality in their artistic work. They have developed a keen eye for detail, a respect for different artistic traditions, and a willingness to experiment with new ideas and techniques.
Our pupils' artwork is proudly displayed throughout the school, showcasing their creativity and growth as artists. We have observed improvements in their fine motor skills, observational abilities, and critical thinking, all of which are transferable skills that benefit their overall academic progress.
Furthermore, we have seen a positive impact on the school community as a whole, with art and design projects bringing pupils, parents, and staff together in creative collaboration. Our pupils leave primary school with a deep appreciation for the arts, equipped with the skills and enthusiasm to continue exploring their artistic potential in secondary school and beyond.
